MV opens all roads for trucks up to 17.88 meters in length
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the last federal state to open its entire road network to so-called long trucks up to a maximum length of 17.88 meters. The Ministry of Transport in Schwerin announced on Friday that the practice already in place in other federal states had shown that there was no loss of road safety. The approval is initially valid until the end of 2026.
For even longer trucks (up to 25.25 meters), a desired route would still have to be applied for, which would then be examined and approved if necessary. The authorities hope that the long trucks will reduce the number of journeys due to the larger loading area. According to the Federal Highway Research Institute, two long truck journeys replace three journeys with conventional vehicles.
According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the weight of long trucks may not exceed the conventional axle loads and total masses. It remains at a maximum of 40 tons to 44 tons, according to the ministry.
Traffic in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern might increase with the integration of longer trucks into the road network. The enhancement in transportation options is expected to decrease the number of trips required for goods delivery, contributing to traffic reduction.
