Culture - Museums sell more tickets again: 81.4 million visits

After the coronavirus slump, museums in Germany are back on track to their old visitor numbers. Last year, the Institute for Museum Research recorded 81.4 million visits. The institution, which is based at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin, announced the figures for 2022 on Tuesday.

The museums participating in the survey thus reported around twice as many visitors as in 2021. At the same time, the figure is still a good quarter below 2019, the last year before the pandemic, according to the data. The institute contacted 7076 museums for its survey, with 4268 museums reporting their figures.

There were considerable differences between the individual regions. While museums in Saxony-Anhalt recorded only 15 percent fewer visits than in 2019, the number of visitors to museums in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (minus 47 percent) and Saarland (minus 43 percent) was much higher than before the pandemic.

Exhibition venues without their own collection also recorded a significant increase. Almost 4.9 million tickets were sold there in 2022. This corresponds to an increase of 146% compared to the previous year. Compared to 2019, these institutions are still missing around ten percent of visits. The institute wrote to 509 facilities, 318 reported their attendance figures.

For the tickets, there were 6233 exhibitions on display in the museums in 2022, while the exhibition venues reported 1614 presentations.

"As expected, the impact of the pandemic on the museum sector continued to weaken in 2022," said Institute Director Patricia Rahemipour. However, she pointed out major differences. Whether a museum was able to regain its audience depends very much on whether it is located in the countryside or in the city, whether it is privately or publicly run and to which content area, such as art, culture, archaeology, nature or technology, it belongs.

David Vuillaume, Managing Director of the German Museums Association, described 2022 as a year of transition. "On the one hand, we are seeing a strong recovery in visitor numbers and exhibition activities, but on the other hand, the figures this year are still below the previous record levels." Now it is important to efficiently and sustainably promote the resilience of museums in times of multiple crises.
