Archaeology - Museum seeks Christmas mountains for special exhibition
The State Museum of Archaeology in Chemnitz is looking for privately owned Christmas mountains for an exhibition project. From fall 2024 until the Capital of Culture year, a large special exhibition will be dedicated to mining in the region and in Europe, the museum announced on Thursday. It will also focus on the effects of mining on culture and, in particular, the customs of the Ore Mountains and the Christmas season. The Christmas mountains are an important aspect of this. These are miniature landscapes that are often equipped with sophisticated mechanics. They depict scenes from mining and the Christmas story.
"Building a Christmas mountain is already a living memory," explained the head of the exhibition team, Jens Beutmann. "It brings the mining tradition into your own four walls." According to experts, many historical local and Christmas mountains in private ownership have been lost in recent decades.
For the special exhibition, the museum is asking owners of such Christmas mountains for help. They can submit photos or videos of their Christmas mountains. However, we are only looking for examples with motifs from the mining industry. A selection will then be shown in the exhibition. The builders and owners will also have their say.
