Literature - Muser receives the Luchs Youth Book Prize for his novel "Weil."

The author Martin Muser has been awarded the Luchs 2023 Children's and Youth Book Prize for his young adult novel "Weil. (Carlsen Verlag) has been awarded the Luchs 2023 Children's and Young Adult Book Prize, the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" and Radio Bremen announced on Tuesday. The prize, endowed with 8,000 euros, will be awarded on the eve of the book fair on April 20, 2024 in Leipzig.

In "Weil.", Muser tells the story of five young people from Berlin who travel to the countryside to study for their ethics A-levels. On the way, they pick up a young hitchhiker, but leave him at a petrol station a little later. The next day, the boy appears at the door with his older brother and a friend and they demand that the clique pay their debt.

"Martin Muser's novel is a lesson about fear, courage and violence. He stages a sophisticated chamber play in which the power trip of some becomes the powerlessness of others," the jury said in its statement. The novel is a "disturbing imposition - in the best sense of the word, because in all its mercilessness it is an invitation to radically question oneself and the foundations of this society".

Muser, born in Stuttgart in 1965, lives and works as a freelance author, dramaturge and lecturer in Berlin. His children's book debut "Kannawoniwasein" was released in cinemas in August 2023. Every month, "Die Zeit" and Radio Bremen award the Luchs Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature to a book. The annual Lynx is chosen from the twelve monthly winners.
