Municipalities possessing financial equilibrium seek out loans

In Lower Saxony, the number of debt-free municipalities is limited. Just two cities and a few town and municipal associations make up this group. Regrettably, some won't achieve debt-liberation in the near future.

- Municipalities possessing financial equilibrium seek out loans

Just around 10 out of over 400 municipalities in Lower Saxony are financially indebtness-free, as per the most recent financial statistics. The State Statistical Office revealed this information at the end of 2023, stating that the cities of Burgwedel and Verden on the Aller, the communities of Scheeßel, Moormerland and Dötlingen, the collective municipalities of Baddeckenstedt, Kirchdorf and Schwaförden, and the unincorporated areas of Lohheide and Osterheide were all debt-free. A dpa survey uncovered numerous factors contributing to this debt-free standing, but some of these municipalities might not maintain this status indefinitely.

In Burgwedel and Verden, thriving businesses and thoughtful financial managment significantly impact their favorable fiscal situations. Verden further profits from an annual evaluated and updated action plan for responsible budgeting equilibrium. However, neither city can entirely dodge debt in the long run.

Both cities are considering investments in areas like education and fire protection, which require borrowing money to finance. The community of Scheeßel in the Rotenburg district also needs to secure loans for their planned investments, as Mayor Ulrike Jungemann revealed. The municipality has previously relied on the sale of collective utilities for its financial support.

Despite their current debt-free status, other municipalities like Scheeßel might also need to seek loans for upcoming investments. Diverse economic sectors, such as education and fire protection, often necessitate financial support through borrowing.
