Parliament - Municipalities: Around 250 million euros more per year from the state
Saxony-Anhalt's municipalities will receive significantly more money from the state from 2024. To this end, the state parliament passed an amendment to the Financial Equalization Act (FAG) on Wednesday. The allocations will rise from the current 1.846 billion euros to around 2.095 billion euros - an increase of 249.6 million euros. "In view of the state's financial capacity, this is an extremely large amount," said Finance Minister Michael Richter (CDU) in parliament.
Many local authorities had repeatedly complained in the past that the money from the state was not enough. The biggest plus is for the rural districts. They are to receive 126.6 million euros more, the independent cities 87.8 million euros more and the municipalities belonging to the districts 35.2 million euros more. The additional money is necessary as the local authorities have to shoulder considerable additional burdens, said Rüdiger Erben, the SPD parliamentary group's spokesperson for internal affairs.

The amendment was proposed by the CDU-led State parliament, with Finance Minister Michael Richter playing a key role. This additional funding will greatly benefit various types of municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt, including rural districts, independent cities, and towns within districts, each receiving significant increases in their allocations. Households in these municipalities may potentially see improvements in local services and facilities due to the increased financial support.
