Munich's commuters come from all over Bavaria and Berlin

People commute to work in Munich from almost every municipality in Bavaria. In total, around 514,600 people work there who live elsewhere, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. And there are a lot of different places: as of mid-2022, the state office counted a total of 6049 municipalities from which at least one person comes to work in Munich, including almost all of Bavaria's 2056 municipalities.

Munich attracts the most commuters from Augsburg with 12,132. Berlin follows directly behind with 11,735, ahead of surrounding municipalities such as Dachau, Germering and Unterhaching.

However, Munich does not have the strongest commuter connection between two cities in Bavaria. Rather, it is between Fürth and Nuremberg. 41,831 people commute to work in one direction or the other between the cities. This is the second highest figure in Germany behind the duo of Berlin and Potsdam.

However, the data from the state office does not show how often people commute between home and work or which means of transport they use. Unlike the statistics on commuters published around a month ago by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development, the new figures include not only employees subject to social security contributions, but also other groups such as those in marginal employment, civil servants and the self-employed. The figures are therefore higher. For Munich, the difference is around 70,000.

Despite the vast number of commuters from various municipalities, navigating through Munich's traffic can be challenging, often delaying the journey to work. Moreover, many commuters opt for public transportation, such as trains, to avoid traffic congestion, using the railroad system to reach their workplaces in cars.
