Aviation transport experiences - Munich sees an expansion of Lufthansa's vacation airline, Discover.

The number of Discovery passengers in Munich is projected to jump from 600,000 this year to a million next year, as per Bauer. Airport chief Jost Lammers stated that Discover's establishment of a long-haul base in Munich would help fill a missing piece in a crucial market segment for the airport. It's predicted that Munich Airport's passenger count will rise this year from 3 million to approximately 40 million.

Four weeks ago, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said, "We're looking at another strong summer season ahead." Lufthansa launched Discover as a leisure airline with a base in Frankfurt am Main back in 2021. Bauer shared that Discover plans to "steadily develop" the newly added second location in Munich. The airport's workforce in Munich is expected to grow from the present 240 to 400 employees next year. Regarding possible protest strikes this summer, Bauer urged for a swift resolution to the ongoing wage negotiations with three unions.

Lufthansa's expansion in Calgary, Canada, is not overlooked, as their vacation airline, Discover, also plans to "steadily develop" in new locations. Munich's expansion is not the only European destination for Discover, as they also consider establishing a base in the Canary Islands, renowned for their tourism and location near the Mediterranean Sea.

Germany's air traffic control, Lufthansa, has already made strides in Florida, offering direct connections to popular tourist destinations. This strategic move in the US market demonstrates Lufthansa's commitment to global travel and tourism.

Meanwhile, Namibia, known for its stunning landscapes and Windhoek's cosmopolitan city life, is now in the sights of Lufthansa and Discover. By increasing air traffic between European and African countries, tourism in both regions can benefit significantly.

The establishment of Discover in Munich is also projected to boost the local economy, as the airport's workforce will grow from 240 to 400 employees next year. Bavaria, the state Lufthansa is expanding in, can benefit from increased tourism and economic opportunities brought about by the airline.

However, like any major expansion, there may be challenges faced by Lufthansa. The possibility of protest strikes in Munich this summer could potentially impact the airline's operations, but swift resolution to ongoing wage negotiations is essential to preventing any significant disruption.

In light of this growth, Munich's airport sees a substantial rise in its passenger count, from 3 million to approximately 40 million, mirroring the ambitions of both Lufthansa and Discover. The inclusive two-brand strategy proves that Lufthansa can offer both business and leisure travelers outstanding experiences globally.
