English National Team - Munich resident triumphs in unique cheese contest
A German man, Tom Kopke (22) from Munich, has emerged victorious in this year's cheese rolling contest held in Gloucestershire, England. The event, steeped in tradition, sees participants hurling themselves down a hill to capture a swiftly rolling piece of dairy. Thrilled with his success, Kopke shared with the British news agency PA, "I'm ecstatic!"
His recollection of the event is hazy, lacking clarity. He had been informed that the best tactic was to barrel down the incline, only to squeeze out and sprint to the finish. Kopke recounted, "I just slid and had to get up fast to reach the end."
The race, believed to be rooted in pagan spring festivals, has an intriguing history. Officially, it was halted after drawing unwanted crowds of over 15,000 participants. As such, it's been conducted under the radar. Injuries have been a part of the event for ages, BBC reported.
When prompted about his German origin, Kopke gestured to the crowd and the hill, stating, "I adore this event. It's so crazy." He promised to gift his prize to his grandmother.
