Munich has town hall tower guarded by security guards
The city of Munich is having the town hall tower better guarded following an incident during a pro-Palestinian demonstration. Unknown persons had hung a Palestinian flag on the outside of the tower from the visitors' platform during the demonstration on Saturday. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has ordered "that security personnel be positioned there with immediate effect in order to prevent incidents of this kind in future", a city spokesperson announced on Tuesday. The media had previously reported on this.
According to the city, the tower was accessible to ticketed visitors on Saturday. As usual, there were ticket checks, but no bag checks. According to the report, visitors drew the attention of a security guard to the flag in the afternoon. He removed the flag together with a colleague. The police confiscated it.
The decision to reinforce security at Munich's town hall tower is a response to the conflicts that arose during recent demonstrations. These conflicts often involve acts of defacement, as seen in the incident with the Palestinian flag.
