Weather - Munich also salts sidewalks due to persistent icy conditions
Due to persistently icy conditions in some parts of the city, the City of Munich intends to use road salt on sidewalks as an exception until December 20. According to the building department, "only salting the icy surfaces is effective in the current situation with the low night-time temperatures", said Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) on Thursday.
Within the Mittlerer Ring and in the center of Pasing, the city will therefore also salt sidewalks and side streets "to clear them of ice as quickly as possible". Outside this zone, residents are also allowed to spread salt as an exception. Normally, only grit is allowed.
He is aware that road salt has many disadvantages from an ecological point of view, said Reiter. "Unfortunately, the current danger situation requires us to make a temporary exception. Just spreading grit is simply not enough at the moment to ensure the safety of people on foot."

Munich, being located in the Bavarian region, often experiences varying seasons with persistent icy conditions. In Upper Bavaria, specifically in Munich and its districts, the use of road salt on sidewalks during winter becomes necessary. This practice is not uncommon, as even side streets in areas like the Mittlerer Ring and Pasing may require salting to prevent ice buildup. Following the lead of Munich's municipalities, residents in some zones are also permitted to distribute road salt as an exception to the usual grit use in response to the adverse weather conditions. Despite the environmental concerns associated with road salt, as acknowledged by Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, who represents the SPD party, the urgent necessity to address the icy conditions and ensure pedestrian safety takes precedence.
