Voting Processes - Multiple parties take measures to block AfD.
A "barrier" is seen as vital by multiple parties in Brandenburg following the European and local elections, says Sebastian Walter, leader of the Left faction in Potsdam on Tuesday. "The Left will have no dealings with the AfD," he stated. "The AfD are a party that goes against democracy," added Walter. He conceded that the AfD does tackle existing issues, but fails to provide answers to these problems.
Steeven Bretz, parliamentary manager for the CDU faction, mentioned the clear stance of the federal CDU faction: no dealings with the AfD. "'Our standpoint on the AfD is well-defined," asserted Bretz. Free Voters group head Péter Vida also upheld the significance of such a barrier. "Our stance on demarcation has always been clear," he reiterated.
Since the Brandenburg Constitutional Protection flagged the AfD state association as potentially right-wing extremist, the AfD triumphed in both the European and municipal elections in the state on Sunday. In the European election, the AfD topped with 27.5%, beating the CDU, the new Left-Wagenknecht alliance, and the SPD. In the municipal elections, the AfD finished with 25.7%, coming before the CDU and the SPD.
Above all, AfD faction leader and state deputy leader Hans-Christoph Berndt appealed to other parties to eliminate this barrier on Monday. Presuming that governing against the most powerful party in the nation, in the districts, and in the cities is ineffective, Berndt maintained. Concurrently, he demanded the AfD, as the strongest contender in district and city councils, to be assigned the position of chair.
