Verdict - Multi-year prison sentences for large-scale cocaine trafficking

Two drug dealers have been sentenced to several years in prison by the Limburg district court for trafficking several tons of narcotics. "We are talking about almost 4.5 tons of cocaine," said the presiding judge at the sentencing on Monday. The 49-year-old main offender received a prison sentence of 13 years and nine months; he was found guilty of six cases of drug trafficking. According to the judge, he had been "the driving force". He had established the contacts and organized the trafficking. The verdict is not yet final.

The 49-year-old had stated in the trial that he was not dealing in drugs but had attempted to commit fraud. He had collected advance payments, but had not wanted to deliver anything in return. The district court ruled this out for several reasons. Among other things, the man had been under surveillance and messages had been analyzed. "The chats show step-by-step transactions," explained the judge.

In contrast to the 49-year-old, the other defendant, aged 68, confessed. He was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for two counts of drug trafficking. Both men had a "high level of criminal energy", as the judge said.

The convicted men had repeatedly brought cocaine from South America to Europe over a period of several years, mainly to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The trial in Limburg lasted nine months and was heard over 28 days. The Public Prosecutor General's Office had requested slightly higher sentences in each case.
