Müller wants to continue beyond 2024
As expected, Thomas Müller has announced his intention to continue his career beyond the end of the season. "I definitely want to continue playing for a year beyond 2024. At least that's my plan," the 34-year-old from FC Bayern Munich told Sport Bild. "I continue to enjoy being on the pitch - I hope you can see that."
Müller's contract expires at the end of the season, as do those of captain Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr. Apart from seven years as a child at TSV Pähl, Müller only played for the German top flight. "He is a veteran of the club - there will never be another like him," said President Herbert Hainer recently. There is no rush on the contract issue. "He knows how much we all appreciate him."
According to information from "Sport Bild", FC Bayern is planning initial talks with the club icon in the coming weeks. Müller, who is one of the top earners in the team, has made his decision in principle. He wants to continue his career at the highest level and continue to play in the Champions League. According to "Sport Bild", he has not ruled out a move within the Bundesliga - although this is difficult to imagine.
Following the absence of Jamal Musiala, Müller was recently given a starting role again under Thomas Tuchel against 1. FC Heidenheim. The serial title winner has long since come to terms with the fact that the long-standing "Müller always plays" maxim no longer applies and that he is mainly needed as a wild card in the home stretch of his career.
Müller was recently celebrated for scoring his 500th goal in the furious 8-0 win over SV Darmstadt. "Hopefully I'll never lose my drive to score goals," the 125-time international told the German Press Agency in October. Given his goal and assist tally and his record-breaking title haul, it is astonishing that the 2014 world champion has never been Footballer of the Year.
Should Müller play at FC Bayern until 2025, it could be the perfect end to a picture-book career: There will be another Champions League final in Munich on May 31, 2025.
Thomas Müller's future in the Bundesliga beyond 2024 might involve negotiations with FC Bayern Munich, considering his desire to continue playing at the highest level and participate in Champions League matches. The German national team player has shown no interest in leaving the Bundesliga, despite being a top earner at Bayern.
Müller's impressive performance in the Bundesliga, where he has spent the majority of his career, has led many to speculate about potential transfers within the league, but moving clubs within Germany seems challenging.
