MP leaves Brandenburg Free Voters parliamentary group

Member of Parliament Philip Zeschmann has surprisingly left the BVB/Free Voters parliamentary group in the Brandenburg state parliament, putting the future of the group in question. He announced the move in a statement on Monday. Zeschmann, who was the parliamentary group's transport policy spokesperson among other things, has been a member of the state parliament since 2019. With his resignation, the future of the Free Voters parliamentary group may be open.

A state parliament spokesperson said: "The associated legal issues and possible consequences are being examined." According to Brandenburg's parliamentary group law, parliamentary groups have at least five members. If a party or political association receives at least 5 percent of the second votes in a state parliamentary election without achieving the number of second votes required for five members, a parliamentary group can also consist of four members. In 2017, the three-member parliamentary group of the Free Voters in the state parliament broke up due to an internal dispute.

The departure of MP Philip Zeschmann from the Free Voters parliamentary group in Brandenburg has left some Free voters in a quandary about the group's future direction. Regardless of the legal examination underway, the Free Voters parliamentary group now needs to find ways to maintain its required membership of at least five members to continue operating in the state parliament.
