Motorists face one of the busiest weekends of the year

Even in densely populated areas like North Rhine-Westphalia, it could get busy, the spokesperson continued. Around Munich, there's also traditionally heavy traffic to expect, as many travelers pass through from and towards the south.

The longest delays are expected by the ADAC at motorway construction sites. Many of them remain open during the summer travel season. The ADAC recommends flexible travelers to depart mid-week, for example on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Patience is also required on international routes. Congestion is to be expected on heavily traveled routes in Switzerland and Austria, as well as on highways to the Italian, French, and Croatian coasts. Delays are also expected on highways to and from Scandinavia, Poland, and the Netherlands, according to the ADAC.

Border controls could also delay the journey by about an hour. The focus of controls from the German side has been on entry from Austria for years, according to the ADAC. However, controls are also being stepped up at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. Due to the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris until August 11, travelers at German-French border crossings are also being checked more frequently.

In contrast, if you're planning a trip to Bremen, known for its historic city center and Bremen Town Musicians, traffic might not be as significant an issue. Regardless, it's always wise to allow extra time for your journey, considering potential unexpected delays.
