- Motorists are stuck in flooded subways
A severe storm kept emergency services in the region around Nuremberg and Fürth busy until evening. Among other incidents, at least six cars were trapped in flooded underpasses. The occupants were initially trapped in their vehicles, the fire department reported. However, all those affected managed to free themselves before the arrival of emergency services and remained unharmed.
Similar incidents occur at affected underpasses time and time again, said operations manager Thomas Schertel. "We wonder why people drive into them." It seems the danger is often underestimated.
In Nuremberg, three underpasses were affected, with one car submerged at each location. In Fürth, there were similar situations at two locations - at one of them, several cars were submerged in water.
In total, around 340 deployments were handled during the storm by 6:30 PM; the majority were in Nuremberg, but Fürth and the surrounding area were also affected, the fire department reported.
Various streets and cellars were flooded due to heavy rain. The operation of the Nuremberg crematorium at Westfriedhof was temporarily threatened by incoming water but was maintained through the diligent actions of staff.
In the Nuremberg region, there was a major power outage due to the storm, but it was quickly resolved. A high level of deployment is expected to continue into the night, the control center reported.
The weather conditions during the storm were severe, leading to flooded underpasses in both Nuremberg and Fürth. Despite the danger, people continue to drive into these flooded areas, often underestimating the risk.
