European Football Championship - Motorcades and honking concerts: Turkey fans celebrate victory

Some Turkey fans celebrated in several Bavarian cities following their national team's victory and qualification for the EURO 2020 quarter-finals. Particularly in the Munich Ludwig- and Leopold-streets, many football fans were on the move; the police reported several thousand people according to their own estimates.

At times, pyrotechnics were set off: The Petuel tunnel was temporarily closed due to the tunnel being filled with smoke from the burning pyrotechnics. However, the restrictions could be lifted again at night and traffic could resume.

Late in the evening, the police set up traffic restrictions and diversions from Munich Freedom Square to Sieges Tor to prevent dangerous situations between fans celebrating on the roadway and cars. The bus traffic was also affected.

Accident during Autokorso drive

An incident occurred in Rosenheim: A vehicle in an Autokorso had driven onto the wrong lane and collided with another car. According to police witnesses, the 29-year-old driver was only driving slowly when she swerved onto the wrong lane. Neither she nor the 52-year-old driver of the other car were injured in the accident. However, a breathalyzer test at the scene showed a value of 0.3 promille for the woman. An investigation is now underway against her.

No large gatherings due to rain?

Reports of celebrations also came from other cities: The Lower Bavaria Police Headquarters reported several Autokorso with loud horn honking and waving flags. Large crowds remained absent. The police counted around 300 people in Landshut. The mood was relaxed, people were happy about the 2:1 win against Austria, as reported.

In Aschaffenburg, Lower Franconia, around 200 to 300 vehicles were counted during an Autokorso. According to reports, only a few people got out - perhaps also due to the rain in the night. Several callers had complained to the police about the noise disturbance. In southern Swabia, a police spokesman spoke of "surprisingly" few fans on the streets - even there it had rained.

Mostly, it remained peaceful at all reported gatherings. Pyrotechnics were set off occasionally, but no one was injured, as the spokespersons of the presidia reported.
