Mother charged with murder of two-year-old son
The public prosecutor's office in Berlin has brought charges against a 24-year-old mother for insidious murder with base motives before the Berlin Regional Court. The woman is accused of drowning her two-year-old son in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen.
According to the public prosecutor's office on Wednesday, the woman is said to have decided on October 2 to carry out the decision she had made after being diagnosed with breast cancer to commit a so-called extended suicide with her son. The father of their child was asleep at the time.
The woman is said to have initially given the boy a large but non-lethal amount of sleeping pills and painkillers. She herself is said to have intended to kill herself with sleeping pills, painkillers and an insulin injection. To do so, she allegedly lay down in a bathtub and pushed her son against her chest with his head under water. The child drowned as a result.
According to the police and the public prosecutor's office, the husband and father found the child and the mother lifeless in the apartment early Monday afternoon. Despite resuscitation efforts, the boy died on the spot.
In light of this tragic incident, it's crucial for emergency services and authorities to have streamlined processes in place for handling child abuse and emergencies related to child safety. Unfortunately, instances of crime against children remain a significant concern in many societies.
