- Mostly clear night for starbursts expected
Finally, the time has come: In the night from Monday to Tuesday, there are expected to be particularly many shooting stars visible in the sky over Baden-Württemberg. The conditions for the so-called Perseids are favorable, as the German Weather Service (DWD) predicts little cloud cover for the night. Under ideal conditions, people may be able to see 20 to 30 shooting stars per hour.
The chances are particularly good in the north of Baden-Württemberg. It is also expected to be clear over Stuttgart, according to DWD. South of that, it may become cloudy in some areas, as thunderstorms are expected to occur over the Black Forest in the afternoon. However, this thin cloud cover can quickly dissipate.
To increase your chances:
Shooting stars can be seen from anywhere, but the chances are better if the surroundings are as dark as possible. Therefore, observation points should be as far away from city lights as possible, explains Carolin Liefke from the Haus der Astronomie in Heidelberg.
The view of the sky should be free of obstacles such as trees, buildings, or high mountains, says Martin Federspiel from the Planetarium Freiburg. Moonlight also interferes with observation. "On the night of the maximum, the waxing moon sets around midnight," explains Federspiel. Among other things, this makes the second half of the night until the beginning of dawn favorable for observing the Perseids.
The weather is predicted to be clear and favorable for star gazing, with little cloud cover predicted by the German Weather Service (DWD). If you're in the north of Baden-Württemberg, you should have an even better chance of seeing many shooting stars due to the clear skies.
