- More vehicles with inadequate insurance policies being stolen in MV
Last year, car thefts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern went down noticeably, going against the general trend. As per the German Insurance Association, a total of 181 insured vehicles were taken – a 16% drop compared to the previous year. The worth of the stolen cars also decreased, causing a drop in damages from 4.2 to 3.1 million euros. The theft rate was merely half the national average, with only two incidents per every 10,000 insured vehicles. On a national scale, 14,585 insured cars were pilfered last year, marking a nearly 20% increase from 2022, while damages climbed by 6% to reach 310 million euros.
As for the city with the highest car theft risk, that title goes to Berlin. Here, nearly one out of every three thefts – 4,266 to be precise – took place last year.
The Commission, aiming to address this issue, may consider seeking assistance from the Member States regarding car theft prevention strategies. In light of the Commission's role, it could benefit from the Member States' expertise in reducing car thefts, such as in Berlin where significant numbers are reported.
