More than two out of three homes have fiber optics on their doorstep
More and more households in Schleswig-Holstein have access to fast Internet via fiber optics. "In 70 percent of all house addresses in Schleswig-Holstein, fiber optic is at least in front of the house," State Secretary for Economic Affairs Julia Carstens told the German Press Agency ahead of the Fiber Optic Days in Kiel. Almost every second house is connected to the high-performance network.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, this is based on expansion figures from the Broadband Competence Center. The aim of the state government is to ensure largely nationwide coverage in Schleswig-Holstein by 2025. The focus is no longer only on laying fiber optic lines in cities, but also in rural areas.
"Despite the major budget problems, the promotion of fiber optic expansion must not be allowed to stall again," warned Carstens with a view to the federal budget situation following the Federal Constitutional Court's budget ruling. With a considered use of subsidies in addition to the self-economic expansion of the telecommunications companies, a fast and seamless expansion could take place.
Telecommunications companies are also focusing on expanding fiber optics into municipalities beyond urban areas, ensuring that rural communities also benefit from improved Internet services. The expansion of fiber optics in Schleswig-Holstein's municipalities is a crucial step towards achieving the state government's goal of largely nationwide coverage by 2025, which relies significantly on telecommunications advancements, such as the use of fiber optics in telecommunications.
