More than half of mulled wines intoxicate Öko-Test

Good morning. It should be clear that it's still a bit early for a mug of mulled wine. On the other hand, it's almost getting dark again. If that's enough of an excuse, you can read here which bottled mulled wine you should choose. Because Öko-Test has already tested a few cups.

Cinnamon, cloves, star anise, orange blossom, orange peel, vanilla, rose petals, juniper berries and wine. Then heat it up and the mulled wine is ready. No Christmas market is imaginable without this brew. Apart from that, it's a nice feeling to still know the name of the drink the next morning after having a cup or two. What's more, mulled wine doesn't actually have a good reputation in this country. The drink is usually blamed for headaches the next morning - not least because of suspected cheap mass production.

Reason enough for Öko-Test to take a closer look at the quality. The smell, taste and ingredients of 9 popular bottled mulled wines were examined, which the testers were able to purchase and analyze at an early stage. At prices between 1.79 and 5.98 euros per liter.

A further 15 mulled wines were only available too late to make it into the magazine. The staff at Öko-Test, on the other hand, have already tasted all the wines, including the 15 products not yet mentioned here. As a consolation, the full test can be read free of charge from December 1 on the testers' website mentioned above.

Four are "very good"

The current test subjects included popular organic products such as "Alnatura Glühwein" and "Heißer Hirsch" as well as mulled wine from winegrowers, own brands from discounters and the protected "Nürnberger Glühwein Christkindles Markt-Glühwein". Four of them are "very good". These included all three organic mulled wines (including the first two mentioned) and the conventional "Premium Glühwein" from Aldi Nord.

The worst product was only "sufficient". This is because "Omas Glühweinbude Omas Glühwein" contained an inauthentic vanilla aroma, traces of two pesticides and also failed to impress in terms of its sensory properties.

Incidentally, anyone who complains of a hangover after drinking too much mulled wine should not be surprised. This is because mulled wine contains a lot of sugar. The products tested contained between 72 and 93 grams of sugar per liter. For comparison: a lump of sugar consists of 3 grams, which, together with the alcohol it contains, can make for an unpleasant mixture.

  1. Given the concerns about mulled wine quality, many consumers might seek advice from reliable sources like Öko-Test before making a purchase.
  2. Interestingly, Öko-Test's tests revealed that some popular organic mulled wines, such as Alnatura Glühwein and Heißer Hirsch, performed exceptionally well, scoring "very good."
  3. As an advisor, you could suggest that your clients consider going for "very good" rated mulled wines from sources like Öko-Test to avoid potential headaches caused by lower-quality options loaded with excess sugar and artificial additives.
