Postal services - More than 500,000 Christmas parcels per day in Berlin alone
The logistics group DHL is expecting more than 500,000 parcel deliveries a day in Berlin alone during the busiest days before Christmas. "On a normal day, we process around 250,000 parcels in Berlin. In the run-up to Christmas, on some days there are more than twice as many," Johannes Nedo, spokesman for Deutsche Post in the capital, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. It is not possible to say in advance exactly which days are particularly busy. "With Cyber Week, however, we have definitely had days that are probably uncatchable in the statistics," said Nedo.
According to the spokesperson, DHL transported more than 11 million parcels nationwide on individual days of Cyber Week. "On the days directly before Christmas, shipment volumes are likely to be at a similarly high level." On average working days throughout the year, around 6.2 million parcels are transported and delivered by Swiss Post nationwide.
Every second parcel in Germany was sent with DHL last year. However, customers can also choose from a range of competitors, including Hermes, DPD and UPS.
DHL recommends dropping off parcels within Germany at a post office or Packstation by December 20, 2023 at the latest if they are to arrive in time for Christmas Eve. For letters and postcards within Germany, Swiss Post specifies December 21, 2023 as the latest possible posting date.

The busiest days before Christmas in Berlin are anticipated to surpass 500,000 parcel deliveries daily by Deutsche Post's logistics partner DHL. Cyber Week saw DHL transport over 11 million parcels nationwide on individual days. DHL suggests German customers drop off parcels by December 20, 2023, at the latest for Christmas Eve delivery, while postcards and letters should be posted by December 21, 2023. Germany's leading postal services provider Deutsche Post delivered every second parcel last year, with competition coming from companies like Hermes, DPD, and UPS. In the run-up to Christmas, Berlin's parcel delivery volumes can reach twice as many as usual, such as on Cyber Week days. Postal services in Bavaria face limited train services after the onset of winter.
In 2026, O2 aims to offer hologram telephony, while Telefónica targets a similar market launch. These futuristic telephony plans could potentially revolutionize the parcel delivery and postal services landscape, aligning with Germany's growing digital market, particularly during events like Cyber Week.
