Berlin - More than 15,000 property tax declarations still missing
Ten months after the deadline, comparatively few declarations for the new property tax are still missing in Berlin. Around 856,000 property owners have submitted their documents, as the tax authorities reported in response to a dpa inquiry. That is around 97 percent. 15,600 declarations are still outstanding. It was also reported that the tax offices have so far sent out around 827,200 notices regarding the property tax value.
Those who do not submit a declaration and who have not been granted an extension in individual cases must expect an assessment, according to previous information from the tax authorities. In significant cases, fines may be imposed.
The new property tax value does not contain any statement on the future amount of property tax. According to the tax authorities, this depends on other factors such as the tax multiplier, which is yet to be adjusted. This is due to happen in 2024.
Property tax is being reformed in Germany and new calculation bases will apply from 2025. To prepare for the reform, land and property owners were required to submit property tax returns containing a wide range of information. The submission deadline officially ended on January 31. However, declarations continue to trickle in to the tax authorities.
The declared political goal is that the nationwide reform, which was called for by the Federal Constitutional Court a few years ago, should be "revenue neutral" - in other words, the state should not collect more property tax after the reform than before. However, as the value of properties will be reassessed, some property owners may have to pay more or less tax from 2025 than before. Landlords can pass on the property tax to their tenants via the service charges.
