More than 100,000 cars in Brandenburg with alternative drive systems

The number of cars powered by conventional petrol or diesel engines is slowly decreasing. From 2035, the EU has decided that new cars may only be registered with climate-neutral combustion engines.

Traffic - More than 100,000 cars in Brandenburg with alternative drive systems

They are becoming increasingly common on Brandenburg's roads: cars with electric or gas drives. As of July 1 of this year, 100,554 cars with these alternative drive systems were registered in the state. That was around 6.8 percent of all cars, as the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced in response to a question from state parliament member Philip Zeschmann. A year earlier, there were 78,470 of these cars. In the same period, the number of electric charging stations rose by 57 percent to 2095.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, around 975,000 petrol cars were registered in Brandenburg on July 1, almost 11,000 fewer than a year earlier. The number of diesel cars also fell by a good 5800 to around 401,000 vehicles. The number of cars powered by natural and liquid gas fell by 380 to around 13,500.

The Federal Office for Brandenburg listed around 23,000 purely electric cars, an increase of 52 percent. The number of vehicles with a hybrid drive increased by almost 30 percent to a good 63,500. Of these, more than 17,500 were plug-in cars, a good 30 percent more than in mid-2022. These cars are equipped with an electric drive and a fuel engine.

Of the 2095 electric charging points in Brandenburg in the middle of this year, 1529 were normal charging points. Fast charging was possible at 566 points. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 80 percent of electric cars are charged at home.

Hydrogen does not yet play a major role as a car drive. According to the information, in addition to the four hydrogen filling stations in Brandenburg, three more are "in the process of being realized". Due to its low availability and lack of filling stations, hydrogen is primarily used as a drive system in the heavy-duty sector or in rail transport, according to the ministry.
