Crime - More tank fraud and fuel theft in Saxony-Anhalt

The number of cases of fuel fraud and fuel theft in Saxony-Anhalt has recently risen significantly again. Last year, 3508 cases of fuel fraud were recorded, according to a spokesperson for the state criminal investigation department. This is the highest figure in the past ten years. At 2305, significantly fewer such cases were registered in 2021.

In the case of fuel fraud, the fuel dispensed at the filling station is not paid for. According to the police, the detection rate in Saxony-Anhalt last year was around 40 percent.

Offenses in which fuel was stolen from construction vehicles, for example, have also recently increased again in Saxony-Anhalt. 718 cases were recorded last year, according to the police spokesman. This is around 250 more than in 2021, but the current figures are still a long way off the peak: there were over 2,500 cases of fuel theft in 2013. The detection rate in 2022 was 6.4 percent.

The police in Saxony-Anhalt did not provide any information on possible reasons behind this development. The spokesperson also left the amount of damage open. In Brandenburg, a police spokesperson recently said that the number of cases of fuel theft in the years 2019 to 2022 correlated with the oil price trend and higher fuel prices.
