Equal Opportunities Officer - More support for women and girls with disabilities

Thuringia's Equal Opportunities Commissioner Gabi Ohler has called for more commitment to women and girls with disabilities. Many of them face multiple discrimination because of their gender and their disability, said Ohler on International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Sunday.

"We must pay particular attention to those who are affected by multiple forms of discrimination," said Ohler. In the coming year, there will therefore be more self-assertion courses for women with disabilities. Other events for and with women with disabilities will focus on improving access to medical services, for example. Those who are dependent on barrier-free construction have major problems with access to doctors' surgeries, for example.

"Women with disabilities are three times more likely to experience violence than women without disabilities," said Ohler. They are also more likely to live on the poverty line.

According to the German Institute for Human Rights, there were around 6.5 million women and girls with disabilities living in Germany in 2017, which corresponds to around 15 percent of the female population.
