More students from third countries at universities in the Mark Brandenburg
While the number of students at Brandenburg's universities fell slightly in the winter semester 2022/23, the influx from countries outside Europe is continuing. Most recently, 7522 students from so-called third countries were enrolled at Brandenburg's state universities, 370 more than in the winter semester 2021/2022.
This was announced by the Ministry of Science in Potsdam in a previously unpublished answer to a question from state parliament member Daniela Oeynhausen (AfD). The answer is available to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The total number of students fell by 122 to 50,427 in the winter semester 2022/23.
Third countries are all states that do not belong to the EU or the EFTA free trade area. The EU consists of 28 countries, the EFTA of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
A total of exactly 10,841 foreign students were enrolled for the winter semester 2022/23. That was 1363 more than in the previous winter semester. According to the ministry, Brandenburg has the second-highest proportion of foreign students in Germany at 21.5 percent. Only in Berlin is this figure higher at 23.7 percent.
According to the ministry, the most popular subjects studied by foreigners over the past ten years have been environmental and resource management, law and business administration.
MP Oeynhausen was pleased with the positive reputation of Brandenburg's universities abroad. Unfortunately, however, it is unclear how many university graduates remain in Brandenburg. "In other words, how the state benefits from this," Oeynhausen told dpa.
Despite the slight decrease in overall student numbers, the influx of foreign students from non-European countries to Brandenburg's universities has persisted. In fact, the number of students from third countries increased by 370 to 7522 in the 2022/2023 winter semester. Universities in Brandenburg continue to attract a significant number of students from countries outside the EU and EFTA.
