More places in initial reception in Neumünster in future
200 additional places are to be created in the state's initial reception center in Neumünster in the near future. A corresponding proposal by Integration Minister Aminata Touré (Greens) was supported by the Neumünster council, as the ministry announced on Wednesday. In future, there will be space for 1,100 people instead of the current 900.
"By increasing the number of places in Neumünster, we are continuing on our path of providing up to 10,000 places in the state for the initial reception of refugees," said Touré. In this way, the state government wants to relieve the burden on local authorities and be prepared in the event that large numbers of people continue to arrive in the north.
The state currently has a total of 7,800 places in the state shelters in Neumünster, Boostedt, Bad Segeberg, Seeth, Rendsburg and Glückstadt. A further state accommodation facility is due to open in Kiel on Monday and will accommodate up to 600 people in the future. Talks are also underway with municipalities that already have state shelters about a possible increase in capacity. The opening of state shelters at new locations is also being discussed.
Touré and Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack (CDU) took part in a residents' meeting in Boostedt on Tuesday to discuss the current situation surrounding the state accommodation and its future prospects. As things currently stand, refugees can be accommodated there until the end of 2024. The state is aiming for an extension. "Boostedt is a key location for accommodating refugees in Schleswig-Holstein," said Touré. An outstanding job has been done there for years.
The integration of these additional 200 places for refugees in Neumünster's initial reception center will be beneficial for the migration of individuals seeking asylum. The government's support for this proposal by Minister Touré aims to alleviate the pressure on local authorities and prepare for potential future influxes of refugees.
