Animals - More pigs on farms in Thuringia
The number of pigs on farms in Thuringia has continued to rise. According to the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on Wednesday, there were 644,900 pigs on farms at the beginning of November. This was 29,700 pigs or five percent more than at the beginning of May and four percent more than at the same time last year.
The increase was mainly due to a rise in the number of fattening pigs, which increased by around 24,000 to 158,900 animals (18 percent), according to the report. At 71,100 animals, the number of breeding pigs was five percent below the level of the May survey. The number of piglets rose by two percent and young pigs by three percent within six months. Only farms with at least 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows were counted.

The rise in pig population is a significant trend in the Thuringian agricultural sector, managed by the regional State Office. With 644,900 pigs at the start of November, the totals represent a 5% increase from May and a 4% increase year-on-year.
Thuringia's diverse animal population includes more than just pigs, yet the growth in its porcine inhabitants has been a notable aspect in the region's agrarian sector.
Given the increasing number of pigs, local animal welfare organizations are working together with the State Office in Erfurt to ensure appropriate living conditions and standards for these animals on farms.
