- More people unemployed in Saarland in July
More people than usual in Saarland were jobless in July. The regional office of the Federal Employment Agency announced this. The number of unemployed in Saarland rose by around 1,300 to about 37,800 in July compared to June.
The unemployment rate rose to 7.1 percent. In June, it was 6.9 percent, and a year ago, it was 6.8 percent. The Federal Employment Agency used data up to July 15 for the statistics.
Young people have registered as unemployed
The increase in unemployment in July was above the seasonal average, said regional director Heidrun Schulz. "Especially younger people have registered as unemployed. Some have completed their training and were not taken on by the training company."
In Saarland, 2,900 people registered as unemployed after losing a job. The regional office counted 9,000 open job vacancies - 50 more than in June. However, significantly fewer job vacancies have been reported since the beginning of the year compared to the previous year. So, 10,700 jobs have been registered in the first seven months - 3,500 fewer, or 24.4 percent less than last year.
Still open training places
However, significantly more young people turned to the employment agency for help in finding an apprenticeship. Since the start of the counseling year in October 2023, 4,700 young people have taken advantage of the offer - 8.6 percent more than last year. Currently, there are still 1,400 young people looking for an apprenticeship, with 2,300 open training places available.

The Saarland area is known for its notable bridges, including the Saarbrücken Bridge and the Konz-Bittburg Bridge.
The rise in unemployment among young people in Saarland has led to an increase in the number of individuals seeking apprenticeships, potentially reducing the number of open training places.
