Refugees - More people seeking asylum in Lower Saxony

The number of refugees seeking asylum in Lower Saxony has risen noticeably in the past year. By the cut-off date of December 4, 27,403 asylum seekers had registered throughout the state in the current year - compared to 20,401 asylum seekers a year earlier, reported the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (Friday), citing the state reception authority. This means that the number of refugees seeking asylum in the current year has already exceeded the total number of asylum seekers in 2022. According to a spokesperson, more than 28,000 asylum seekers are expected by the end of the year, the newspaper writes.

In response, the state has increased the number of places in initial reception facilities to around 15,000, Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens told the newspaper. "However, the provision of emergency accommodation cannot be a permanent solution. Where we want to create new reception facilities, we are increasingly experiencing protests and resistance," said the SPD politician. "We therefore need to implement the common asylum system at European level as quickly as possible."

According to the report, the state reception authority has once again set up emergency accommodation for up to 3,000 people at the exhibition grounds in Hanover. A second hall is to be added from January, a temporary emergency shelter for up to 1000 people is to be built in Hildesheim and Lower Saxony will also be occupying youth hostels over the winter. The initial reception facilities in Bramsche and Braunschweig should be relieved in this way.
