Minister of the Interior - More money for volunteer fire departments

Volunteer firefighters will receive higher compensation. With retroactive effect from January 2023, they will receive six percent higher rates, with a further six percent increase at the start of the new year, as announced by Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Michael Ebling (SPD) in Mainz on Friday. A number of positions, such as fire brigade commanders and volunteer equipment managers, will benefit from an additional 20 percent increase in their compensation rates. There will also be a 20 percent increase in numerous junior positions.

For example, the maximum monthly compensation rate for fire brigade commanders was previously 157 euros; from next year, it will be up to 209 euros. Up to now, fire chiefs of association municipalities have received between 196 and 509 euros per month as well as 8 euros per fire department unit within the association municipality. In 2024, the compensation rate will rise to between 220 and 572 euros - as well as 10 euros per fire department unit.

"The volunteer fire departments are one of the pillars of our security architecture," said Ebling. "The increase in allowances is an expression of our appreciation for this indispensable activity."

According to the ministry, around 51,000 volunteers are involved in around 2,250 local fire department units in Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition, around 11,500 young firefighters in around 1,100 youth fire departments are preparing for their service in the emergency services.
