More modern heating systems in Saarland
The proportion of households in Saarland with a modern heating system has risen significantly. This year, almost every fourth household has a heating system that is less than five years old, according to the study "How does Saarland heat?" published by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) on Friday. In 2019, their share was still 17.8 percent.
In 14.4% of households, heating systems more than 25 years old were still in use, a proportion that has more than halved within four years. Overall, the average age of a heating system in Saarland fell from 17.9 years (2019) to 14.4 years (2023).
The proportion of gas and oil heating systems both fell slightly. 13.1% of households rely on district heating (2019: 12.5). An electric heat pump is in operation in 4.2% of homes this year, an increase of 2.6 percentage points.
The most common additional heating source continues to be a fireplace, which increased in popularity by almost 4 percentage points to 39.7%. Solar thermal energy became significantly more popular with an increase of almost 10 percentage points (16.3%).
In the context of energy efficiency and climate change, the shift towards modern heating systems in Saarland has led to a decrease in the use of heating systems over 25 years old by consumers, enhancing the overall energy living standards. Despite this, traditional heating sources like fireplaces remain popular, with a significant increase in their usage.
The growing popularity of renewable heating options, such as heat pumps and solar thermal energy, reflects the conscious efforts of Saarland consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a sustainable living environment.
