Mid-year assessment of residential break-ins in North Rhine-Westphalia: Police report a further increase of nearly four percent. According to figures from the State Criminal Police Office NRW and calculations by the German Press Agency, there were 16,400 break-ins and attempted break-ins in homes in the first half of this year. In nearly half of the cases (45 percent), it remained at an attempted break-in.

This corresponds to an increase of nearly four percent compared to the first half of the previous year, when 15,800 such offenses were registered. The increase is thus significantly lower: In the first half of 2022, the number of break-ins increased by 36 percent. In the first half of 2023, it was still a significant 28 percent.

While the clearance rate was 8.8 percent in January 2024, it rose to 18.2 percent in June and reached the best figure so far this year. The figures are preliminary and may differ from the later, quality-checked annual statistics.

The German Press Agency was responsible for calculating the break-in statistics in North Rhine-Westphalia for the first half of the year. The German Press Agency also reported that the clearance rate for residential break-ins improved significantly from January to June in 2024.
