More guests and overnight stays in Hamburg in September
The number of guests and overnight stays in Hamburg increased in September. Accommodation providers in the Hanseatic city reported around 664,000 guests for the month, an increase of 4.6 percent compared to the same period last year, as announced by the Statistics Office North on Tuesday. The number of overnight stays rose by 1.6 percent to just under 1.41 million.
If one only looks at German guests, who accounted for the majority with a good 1.1 million overnight stays, the number of overnight stays rose even more: by 5.1 percent. In contrast, bookings for visitors from abroad were 9.3 percent lower at 300,000 nights. Overall, 19 percent of guests came from abroad - most of them from Switzerland, Denmark, the UK, the USA and Austria.
Due to the weak figures, especially in the first months of the previous year 2022, the nine-month balance sheet for tourism, which is important for the Hanseatic city, is positive: In the period from January to September 2023, a good 5.61 million guests came to Hamburg, 11.7 percent more than in the previous year. They booked almost 12.1 million overnight stays, an increase of 10.3 percent compared to the previous year.
The increase in tourism statistics in Hamburg, as evidenced by the higher number of guests and overnight stays, is contributing to the positive nine-month balance sheet for the city's tourism sector. In contrast, bookings for international tourists showed a decrease, with fewer visitors from abroad compared to the previous year.
