Education - More German and math in elementary school after Pisa shock

After another Pisa shock, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Education Minister Simone Oldenburg (Left Party) believes she is on the right track with her measures. The central task is to strengthen core skills in German and mathematics, she explained on Tuesday after the announcement of the results of the 2022 Pisa study, in which pupils in Germany performed worse than ever before. Her government has introduced measures to strengthen elementary school, where the foundation for later educational success is laid.

For the next school year, the number of lessons in the subjects German and mathematics in elementary school is to be increased. A so-called reading band is also to be introduced. This will involve three to five days of phonics training in elementary school - 20 minutes per day.

According to the Minister, five schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern took part in the Pisa study. The Center for International Comparative Studies in Education at the Technical University of Munich had selected two regional schools, two grammar schools and one special school in the north-east to take part in the study. The results for MV were not published. Nationwide, 257 participating schools with a total of 6116 pupils aged 15 took part.

Pupils in Germany performed worse than ever before in the international performance study in 2022. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Berlin announced that Germany's scores in reading, mathematics and science were the lowest ever measured by Pisa. It is the first Pisa report since the coronavirus pandemic.
