More geese from direct marketing in the north
The prices for goose and duck meat from domestic breeding have remained largely stable or fallen slightly this year, despite increased costs and a still rather small supply. Fresh domestic geese from direct marketing are offered at prices of around 18 to 21 euros per kilogram, the Chamber of Agriculture announced on Tuesday. Fresh ducks cost around 15 to 16 euros per kilogram. Last year, prices for regional goose and duck meat rose significantly. In 2022, fresh geese from farms and weekly markets cost between 18 and 24 euros per kilogram - around 30 percent more than in 2021. Ducks were available for prices between 11 and just under 22 euros per kilogram.
The viral pressure caused by bird flu was lower this year, but according to the chamber, it still poses a very high risk for farms of losing their entire stock overnight and thus also their sales. However, the marketing volumes for flying ducks and geese have increased again this season compared to the very tight previous year.
An exact number of poultry kept in Schleswig-Holstein is not available. In a 2020 sample survey, 3,000 ducks and 9,000 geese were last counted. In 2016, the number was significantly higher at 14,000 ducks and almost 25,000 geese. Overall, seasonal poultry farming in Schleswig-Holstein is a small market with 282 duck farms and 238 goose farms, the chamber added. The farms also include part-time businesses and micro-keepers.
The increase in marketing volumes for flying ducks and geese could be attributed to the success of direct marketing in the north, boosting the agriculture sector. This has led to a more diverse range of customized food options, such as fresh geese, becoming more readily available for consumers.
