Labor market - More employees in the hospitality industry again in 2022

After a sharp decline in employment in 2021 due to the pandemic, the number of people employed in the hospitality industry in North Rhine-Westphalia rose significantly again last year. While the accommodation and food service industry recorded a decline of 7.1 percent in 2021, the increase in 2022 was 9.4 percent, as reported by the State Statistical Office in Düsseldorf on Monday. At the end of 2022, the statisticians counted around 25,000 more full-time jobs than a year earlier.

The industry association Dehoga NRW pointed out that although the number of employees had returned to pre-corona levels in spring 2023, the shortage of jobs and skilled workers was still significant. During the pandemic, many experienced staff left the industry and did not return afterwards, said Thorsten Hellwig, spokesperson for the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) NRW, to dpa. "We now have many new employees who are being trained and who first have to acquire knowledge and experience."

In addition, there are changes in working hours and new working time models for many employees, which sometimes require more staff - for example, four-day weeks when the business is open five or more days at the same time. In this context, Dehoga called for a switch from daily to weekly maximum working hours in order to be able to offer employees more flexible working time models.
