More electricity from renewable energies fed into the grid

Thuringian electricity producers fed more electricity from renewable sources into the grid in 2022 than in the previous year. Of the total of 10,203 gigawatt hours (GWh) last year, 63.7 percent was generated by wind power, photovoltaics and biomass, among others, according to the State Statistical Office in Erfurt. In 2021, slightly less electricity flowed into the supply grid from Thuringia with 9573 GWh. The share from renewables at that time was 60.7 percent.

Almost half of the electricity from renewables in 2022 came from onshore wind turbines, which supplied 3068 GWh. The approximately 42,000 solar plants in Thuringia contributed 1818 GWh, while biomass-powered electricity plants supplied 1419 GWh. This was more electricity per energy source than in 2021, while the amount of electricity generated by natural gas fell by 6.5 percent to 1636 GWh.

The statisticians pointed out that feed-in should not be equated with the generation of electricity. The figures do not include the amount of electricity used by industrial power plants for their own consumption, for example.

In order to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, there's a growing emphasis on harnessing alternative energies. Last year, a significant portion of this alternative energy was electricity, derived from sources like wind power, photovoltaics, and biomass.

The shift towards renewable energies was evident in Thuringia's electricity production, as over two-thirds of the electricity produced in 2022 came from these sources, demonstrating the potential of electricity as a sustainable energy carrier.
