Burgenland district - More designer models in the redesigned shoe museum
In the shoe museum in Weißenfels, five newly designed rooms are now expanding the extensive exhibition. New additions include many contemporary models in particular, which have been in storage for years, as well as a media room in which visitors can enter a shoe store with VR glasses and view the exhibits from all angles, as Isabell Radecke-Aurin, director of the museum and curator of the new exhibition rooms, explained. The new areas have succeeded in "bringing the collection into the present".
In addition to a collection of children's shoes, one room is dedicated exclusively to designer shoes: from Louis Vuitton and Jimmy Choo to a very special pump by Manolo Blahnik. The Spanish shoe designer's high heel made of satin silk with a brooch and stiletto heel achieved cult status in the film for the TV series "Sex and the City". Protagonist Carrie wore the model when "Mr. Big" proposed to her. The museum was able to purchase the shoe back in 2019 with the help of the Friends - now visitors can also admire it.
The exhibition also retells the story of the collection's origins and its founders, the Nolle family of factory owners from Weißenfels. According to the Saxony-Anhalt State Archives, Ernst Nolle donated a selection of 100 pairs of shoes that he brought back from his travels to the Weißenfels Society for Natural History and Antiquities in 1910. "This collection gave rise to today's Weißenfels City and Shoe Museum, in which part of the donation can be seen in the permanent exhibition."
According to the museum, 250 different shoes are on display in the new exhibition rooms. Previously, the area housed a shoe exhibition on ethnology, which has now been streamlined into one room. The area had been closed since August 2023. The museum had to cancel the grand opening of the new rooms planned for December 3 at short notice. The event will be held as part of the museum's New Year's kick-off on January 14.
