Social - More children and young people taken into care
In Lower Saxony, significantly more children were taken into state care by youth welfare offices last year than the year before. The number of children taken into care rose to around 5,500 in 2022 - an increase of 20.4 percent compared to the previous year, reported the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" (Tuesday), citing the Lower Saxony Monitor, a survey by the State Statistical Office. According to the report, taking a child into care is a temporary protective measure if there is a risk to the child's well-being or if the child requests it.
The reason for the sharp increase is the growing number of unaccompanied refugee minors, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Social Affairs told the newspaper. Around 1,500 unaccompanied children and young people came to Lower Saxony in 2022, almost double the previous year's figure - and was the third most common reason for taking a child into care, accounting for 27% of all cases. The most common reason, with a share of 34.8%, was that the parents or one of the parents was overburdened.
