Chemnitz - More chemicals found: operation on Kaßberg continues

The chemical incident on the Kaßberg in Chemnitz kept the police and fire department on their toes on Friday. The affected tenants could not return to their apartments for the time being, the police announced in the morning. After the apartment and attic of a man who had hoarded large quantities of chemicals had been completely cleared by the morning, the emergency services now wanted to tackle the basement of the apartment building. It was initially unclear how long the operation would last.

Chemicals had already been discovered in the apartment four weeks ago. Now there was another operation on Thursday after further substances were discovered in several hiding places. Specialists from the State Office of Criminal Investigation confirmed the suspicion that explosive chemical mixtures were involved. The house was evacuated and residents of two neighboring apartment buildings also had to leave their homes - a total of 32 people.

In the evening, the substances found were then deliberately detonated. According to the police, another five kilograms of ammonium nitrate were found hidden in the apartment when it was cleared. They were reportedly removed and rendered harmless.

There had already been an evacuation on Kaßberg around four weeks ago. The 70-year-old resident was found dead in the apartment in mid-November. According to the police, it is unclear why he was hoarding the chemicals.
