More cases of domestic violence: victims mostly women

Last year, the number of cases of domestic violence in Hesse rose by around 1,000 to 11,475 compared to the previous year. As in previous years, the vast majority of victims were female, accounting for 81.7% last year. Accordingly, 81 percent of suspects were men, while the remaining 19 percent of suspects were female. This means that the gender distribution of both victims and suspects has hardly changed compared to the previous year.

During the last state election campaign, Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) repeatedly called for electronic ankle bracelets for perpetrators of domestic violence, citing rising case numbers in both Hesse and the federal government. "Statistically speaking, a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner every third day in Germany. This is highly alarming and unacceptable," explained Rhein during a visit to the joint electronic monitoring center of the federal states at the prison in Weiterstadt in southern Hesse in August.

Justice Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) had also referred to a Hessian initiative to use electronic ankle bracelets in the fight against domestic violence at a recent conference of justice ministers. Current measures such as contact and proximity bans are often ineffective and those affected continue to suffer, he said.

Despite the increasing number of domestic violence cases, affecting dozens of families daily in Germany, families continue to be the primary victims, with women making up the majority of these victims. This unfortunate reality has prompted calls for stricter measures, such as the use of electronic ankle bracelets for perpetrators, to protect these families and prevent further crimes.
