The number of cars registered in North Rhine-Westphalia increased last year. At the beginning of 2024, a total of 10.6 million passenger cars were registered for road traffic in the state, according to the Statistical Office in Düsseldorf. This is 0.8% more than the previous year. The number of electric cars in particular increased by 37.9% to 306,100. The number of hybrid cars rose by 23.3% to 650,800. However, the share of vehicles with hybrid or electric drive in the total inventory is still relatively low.
6.7 million of the cars registered in NRW at the beginning of 2024 were gasoline-powered. This corresponds to a market share of 63.2%. 2.8 million cars ran on diesel (26.5%), and 127,000 ran on gas (1.2%). 956,900 cars were equipped with hybrid or electric drive, which represents a market share of 9.1%. At the beginning of 2024, slightly more than one in five cars registered in Germany had a number plate from NRW.
