Crime investigation - More cameras in the station district: police satisfied
For about half a year, the police in Frankfurt Bahnhofsviertel have had additional surveillance cameras at their disposal - in over 300 cases they have helped with investigations. Among these were offenses such as assault, theft, drug dealing, and robbery, said a police spokesperson to the German Press Agency.
By early July, recordings from the video surveillance systems (VSA) had been evaluated in 580 cases. In 302 cases, suspects could be identified - in 156 further cases, the results of the investigation were still pending, the spokesperson explained. "The numbers speak for themselves and clearly show how the recordings of such VSAs can contribute to solving crimes and to effective prosecution in a crime-ridden area," the spokesperson added.
For the duration of the EM, the police have installed additional mobile cameras in the Bahnhofsgebiet and Alt-Sachsenhausen, "as these areas experience a noticeable influx during such a major sports event."
Weapon-free zone in Bahnhofsviertel
Currently, there are three protected areas in Frankfurt city. Among them are the Konstablerwache, Hauptwache, and the Bahnhofsviertel. Perspectively, according to the police, further cameras are to be added between Kaiserstraße and Taunusstraße.
Since early November of the previous year, a weapon-free zone has applied in the notorious Frankfurt Bahnhofsviertel. Specifically, carrying weapons, according to the Weapons Act, as well as knives with a fixed or foldable blade longer than four centimeters, is prohibited between 20.00 hours and 5.00 hours. Anyone caught with a weapon will have to pay a fine, which is at least 500 Euro.
- Due to the increased crime rate in the Bahnhofsviertel, the German Press Agency reported that the local police have been utilizing additional surveillance cameras, including those in the Station district, to aid in their investigations of offenses such as bodily injury, theft, and assault.
- In an effort to reduce crime in the Bahnhofsviertel, the police have planned to install more surveillance cameras in the area between Kaiserstraße and Taunusstraße, as reported by the German Press Agency.
- Following the implementation of a weapon-free zone in the Bahnhofsviertel since November 2021, the Frankfurt police have been actively using surveillance cameras in this district to monitor for any violations of the Weapons Act or knife regulations, keeping the area safe for its residents and visitors.
- In a recent press release, the Frankfurt police announced that they have effectively utilized surveillance camera recordings from the German Press Agency's coverage of the Bahnhofsgebiet and Alt-Sachsenhausen to identify and prosecute suspects involved in various crimes, including theft and assault, during the European Men's Handball Championship.
