More attacks on refugees in Brandenburg again
The police registered 204 crimes against refugees in Brandenburg in the first nine months of this year. This was 44 crimes more than in the same period last year, according to answers from the Ministry of the Interior in Potsdam to questions from state parliament member Andrea Johlige (Left Party). The figures are provisional and may increase as a result of subsequent reports from police investigations.
From January to the end of September this year, the police registered 27 assault offences, compared to 24 in the same period in 2022. There were also two cases of attacks against refugee accommodation in the second quarter of this year. According to previous information from the Ministry of the Interior, such crimes had not occurred in the previous two years.
Racially motivated crimes have decreased in the year to date. From January to the end of September this year, the police reported 188 such incidents with an almost exclusively right-wing motivation such as incitement to hatred. This was 59 fewer offenses than in the first three quarters of the previous year. This figure may also increase as a result of subsequent reports.
The rise in crimes against refugees in Brandenburg, as shown by the 204 incidents registered by police in the first nine months of this year, raises concerns about potential extremist motivations behind these acts. Unfortunately, two of these attacks targeted refugee accommodations, a trend that was not previously observed in the past two years.
