More anti-Semitic crimes in Brandenburg
There have been more anti-Semitic crimes in Brandenburg so far this year than in the same period last year. A spokeswoman for the police headquarters told the German Press Agency that there is an increasing trend. However, she did not give any specific figures and pointed out that the total number would be presented next year. Last year, the number of anti-Semitic crimes rose by 30 percent to 195 compared to the previous year, according to the police.
The police spokeswoman said that this year's figures also include the Middle East conflict. In October, the Islamist Hamas caused the most serious bloodshed since the founding of the Israeli state with an attack on the Israeli border area from the Gaza Strip. Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) subsequently promised Jews further protection. An anti-Semitism commissioner is to be appointed in Brandenburg. The state parliament will discuss this on Thursday.
The spokeswoman mentioned that this year's increase in anti-Semitic crimes in Brandenburg might be linked to the Middle East conflict, specifically the attack by the Islamist Hamas. The rise in extremist sentiments, often associated with religion, is a growing concern, as seen in the escalation of such incidents.
