Money from the federal government for the restoration of Goethe's home

According to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the Bundestag Budget Committee has set the course for the restoration and museum redesign of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's residence. The federal government will support the project with 17.15 million euros, half of the basic public funding, a representative of the committee informed the foundation on Thursday.

The "Goethe Residence Ensemble" in Weimar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Budget Committee's decision on the Goethe National Museum is subject to the approval of the federal budget.

The President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, Ulrike Lorenz, spoke of a great commitment by the Bundestag to the most important literary monument in German culture. "This ensures the renovation of the Goethe House in a true alliance between the public and private sectors."

According to the foundation, Thuringia, as the second public sponsor, has already signaled that it will provide the other half of the basic funding in 2022. In addition, private foundations have pledged around ten million euros in support, which is linked to the funding commitments from the federal and state governments.

According to the foundation, planning for the restoration of Goethe's residence on the Frauenplan in Weimar in line with its status as a listed building and a new museum concept had already begun with Thuringian support. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026.

The decision to fund the restoration and museum redesign of Goethe's residence falls under the jurisdiction of the Bundestag Budget Committee, given its involvement in literary and cultural heritage preservation. This restoration project, a significant contribution to German literature, will also receive financial support from the private sector with commitments totaling around ten million euros.
